Time to Rest

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2:1-3)

So God created everything in six days, and on the seventh, he rested. There is no evening and morning on this day, because there is no chaos to be ordered. That will come later.

And so, I, too, will rest my case. I hope this book has given you increased confidence in the Bible. It truly is the Word of God.

I think it is appropriate to close this book with a short Gospel presentation.

The Gospel is the Good News of Jesus Christ. John 3:16 says:

God loved the world so much that He sent his only begotten Son into the world.

As you are well aware, all people are sinners. We do things that we know we should not, and do not do other things that we should. Because of this, we often feel guilty. Sin is a burden all men bear.

The reason Jesus came into the world was to relieve man of this burden. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death, and that is what happens every time we sin. Sin robs us of our humanity, and a piece of us dies every time we sin.

We sin not only against ourselves and others, but also against God. This is one reason we fear death. There is a little piece in all of us that thinks we will have to face God after we die, and will have to account for all of our actions while we are on earth.

We are pretty sure this might not go very well, and we are right. The complete Romans 6:23 verse goes like this:

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is Good News for fallen humanity. In this verse, God decrees the punishment for sin as death. This is what our sin has earned us; it is our wages. Jesus paid this price when he died on the cross. He then rose from the dead, proving that he was the Son of God. The key to receiving this gift of eternal life is found in the rest of John 3.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. (John 3:16-21)

Jesus calls all men to come out of the darkness and into the light by believing in him and living by the truth. Those who do receive forgiveness of all their sins and the gift of eternal life.

If you are not a Christian, I would urge you to read the Bible, particularly Jesus’ words in the New Testament, for that is why it was written.

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31)

We will close with the words of Jesus in Revelation 3:19-20.

Be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
